Dashboard OPNsense E-WALL

OPNsense – An intuitive and user-friendly administration interface

OPNsenseis an open-source, easy-to-use, easy-to-build HardenedBSD-based firewall and routing platform. OPNsense includes most of the features found in expensive commercial firewalls, and in many cases more. It brings the rich feature set of commercial offerings with the benefits of open and verifiable sources.

OPNsense started as a fork of pfSense® and m0n0wall in 2014, with its first official release in January 2015. The project evolved very quickly while retaining the familiar aspects of m0n0wall and pfSense. A strong focus on security and code quality guides the development of the project.

OPNsense offers weekly security updates with small increments to react to new emerging threats in a fashionable timeframe. A fixed release cycle of 2 major releases each year gives organizations the flexibility to plan upgrades in advance. For each major release, a roadmap is put in place to guide development and set clear goals.

OPNsense Core Features

  • Trafic Shaper
  • Two-factor authentication throughout the system
  • Captive portal
  • Forward Caching Proxy (transparent) with blacklist support
  • Virtual Private Network (site-to-site and road warrior, IPsec, OpenVPN and legacy PPTP support)
  • High availability and hardware failover (with configuration synchronization and synchronized state tables)
  • Intrusion detection and prevention
  • Built-in reporting and monitoring tools, including RRD charts
  • Netflow Exporter
  • Network flow monitoring
  • Plugin support
  • DNS Server and DNS Forwarder
  • DNS Server and DNS Forwarder
  • Dynamic DNS
  • Encrypted configuration backup to Google Drive
  • Stateful Inspection Firewall
  • Granular control over the state table
  • 802.1Q VLAN support
  • and more …

FEATURES

OPNsense’s feature set includes high-end features such as forward caching proxy, traffic shaping, intrusion detection, and easy OpenVPN client configuration. The latest release is based on HardenedBSD 11.2 for long term support and uses a new Phalcon based MVC framework.

OPNsense’s focus on security brings unique features such as the option to use LibreSSL instead of OpenSSL (selectable in the GUI) and a custom version based on HardenedBSD.

The robust and reliable update mechanism enables OPNsense to deliver important security updates in a timely manner.

STRATEGIC AND ESSENTIAL FEATURES

Dashboard OPNsense

Dashboard

OPNsense offers a dashboard feature to quickly check the status of your OPNsense firewall. Here is the latest version with support for multiple columns by drag and drop.

Modern user interface

The modern user interface provides an excellent user experience with multi-language support, built-in help, and fast navigation with the search box.
The quick search navigation option is shown.

Rules OPNsense

Stateful Firewall

A stateful firewall is a firewall that keeps track of the state of network connections (such as TCP streams, UDP communication) passing through it. OPNsense offers grouping of firewall rules by category, a nice feature for more demanding network setups.

Aliases and GeoLite country database

Managing firewall rules has never been easier. By using aliases, you can group multiple IP addresses or hosts into a single list for use in firewall rules. Additionally, IP addresses or hostnames can be retrieved from external URLs, examples are DROP (Do Not Route Or Peer), the Ransomware tracker from Abus.ch and the integrated database Maxmind GeoLite2 Country.

Alias OPNsense
Trafic shaper OPNsense

Traffic Shaper

Traffic shaping in OPNsense is very flexible and is organized around channels, queues and corresponding rules. Pipes define the allowed bandwidth, Queues can be used to set a weight in the pipe and finally Rules are used to apply shaping to a certain packet flow. Shaping rules are managed independently of firewall rules and other settings.

Two-factor authentication

Two-factor authentication also known as 2FA or 2-step verification is an authentication method that requires two components, such as PIN/password + token. OPNsense offers full system-wide two-factor authentication (2FA) support using TOTP with, for example, Google Authenticator.

Supported 2FA services include:

  • OPNsense Graphical User Interface
  • Captive portal
  • Virtual Private Network – OpenVPN and IPsec
  • Caching proxy
Authentication 2-Factor OPNsense
OPNsense Captive Portal

Captive portal

The captive portal allows you to force authentication or redirect to a click-through page to gain access to the network. This is commonly used on hotspot networks, but is also widely used in corporate networks for an extra layer of security on wireless or Internet access.

Virtual Private Network – HMI IPsec and OpenVPN

OPNsense offers a wide range of VPN technologies ranging from modern SSL VPNs to well-known IPsec as well as older legacy options (now considered insecure) such as L2TP and PPTP. Site-to-site and road warrior setups are possible and with the built-in OpenVPN client exporter, the client can be set up in minutes. Looking for an IPsec or OpenVPN GUI, you just found something better !

VPN OPNsense
HA / CARP OPNsense

High Availability / Hardware Failover (CARP)

OPNsense uses Common Address Redundancy Protocol or CARP for hardware failover. Two or more firewalls can be configured as a failover group. If an interface fails on the primary or if the primary disconnects entirely, the secondary becomes active. Using this powerful feature of OPNsense creates a fully redundant firewall with automatic and transparent failover. When switching to the backup network, connections will remain active with minimal disruption to users.

Caching proxy

The caching proxy offered by OPNsense is comprehensive and includes category-based web filtering, extensive ACLs, and can work in transparent mode. The proxy can be combined with the traffic shaper to improve the user experience. Integration with most professional antivirus solutions is possible via the ICAP interface.

Blacklist OPNsense
IDS OPNsense

Intrusion detection and prevention

OPNsense’s online IPS system is Suricata-based and uses Netmap to improve performance and minimize CPU usage. This deep packet inspection system is very powerful and can be used to mitigate wire-speed security threats.

Built-in support for ET Open rules.
The ETOpen ruleset is an excellent IDS/IPS anti-malware ruleset that allows users with cost constraints to significantly improve their existing malware detection on the network.

Integrated SSL Blacklist (SSLBL)
A project maintained by abuse.ch. The goal is to provide a list of “bad” SSL certificates identified by abuse.ch as being associated with malware or botnet activity. SSLBL relies on SHA1 fingerprints of malicious SSL certificates and offers various blacklists.

Feodo Tracker
Embedded Feodo (also known as Cridex or Bugat) is a Trojan used to commit bank fraud and steal sensitive information from victims’ computers, such as credit card details or account information. identification. At the moment, Feodo Tracker tracks four versions of Feodo.
